Printing

Tired of having to log in one of the PCs at the study centre every time you have to print something? You can send a printing order from your laptop in any UvA study centre. To configure the wireless printing in your linux laptop just follow these steps:

1. Go to System > Administration > Printing

2. Clic Add > Printer

3. Clic Network printer > Windows printer via SAMBA

4. Fill in with the following info:

smb://print.student.uva.nl/printer name

Authentication details:

Name: uva\yourUvaNetID

Password: your password

Replace the text in bold letters with your personal information. You will find the printer names for the different UvA locations below:

5. Choose the PPD file for the OCE printer.

In the following dialogue, you will have to provide the PPD file for the OCE printer.

For the OCE black and white printers (Oce VL 3622) use this file.

For the OCE colour printers (Oce VL 3622c) use this file.

6. Installable options and printer description

In the two following dialogue, you will be asked to set some installable options. I left all the default values and it worked fine, but you can also try other options.

And finally you will have to provide a description of the printer (name, location, etc.).

You can manage other options by going to System > Administration > Printing. Right-click on the printer you just created and choose “Properties”. In the “Printing Options” submenu you can choose the page size (A4) or if you want 1-sided or 2-sided printing, among other things.

NOTE: Since I no longer live in Amsterdam, I have no way of making sure if the instructions on this blog are still accurate. If there are any current UvA students or staff who would like to contribute to keep this blog alive and up-to-date, please leave a replay so we can get in touch.

  1. I followed the instructions on the page to install the printer “p005197” on my ubuntu. However, it was unsuccessful. I wonder if I wrote the right name in the smb textfield:

    • Hi,
In which UvA study centre are you trying to use the printer? You have to find the printer name for your location in the list. For instance, for the Bushuis study centre, the printer name is bus-printer, for the Study Center BG5, the printer name is bg5-printer, and so on. “p005197” doesn’t seem to be a valid printer name for any of the UvA study centres. You should verify this.
Also, make sure you fill in the authentication details with your UvANetID, and that you download the correct PPD file.

  2. p005197 is a printer in the EDU domain (FNWI).

  3. The driver provided here didn’t work for me. after I installed my Printer (P005453 at 4th floor) with this driver, it prints a stack of white paper every time I send a print. I think there is a bug.

    • I had the same problem, it made my day though:)

    • I had the same problem, did you find a fix?

  4. I foudn that this guide worked for me: http://staff.science.uva.nl/~kholshei/linux_guide/
